What we do

what is included in our work

From and waste management to preserving ecological biodiversity, our approach is focused on reducing the environmental footprint of our operations.

We continually evolve our best practices. And, as our business operations expand, so do the initiatives we undertake designed to protect our local environment.
Our early efforts in ‘society-focused’ support initiatives, between the 1930s and 1970s, were centered on Saudi Arabia’s infrastructure and industrial development, including building schools and highways, providing water and electricity, and working to eradicate diseases such as malaria.
The Sustainability, Risk, and HSE Committee
The Sustainability, Risk, and HSE Committee assists Tengiz’s Board of Directors with the Company’s governance, risk, and compliance regime, including matters related to sustainability.
We strive to provide a safe and respectful working environment for all. At Tengiz, we make every effort to be a responsible business. As stakeholder expectations evolve, we seek to meet the new and emerging challenges that present themselves.

Our approach to sustainability

A sustainable approach is essential to how we operate, as well as to ensuring that Tengiz continues to thrive in the long-term, and remains one of the world’s leading integrated energy and chemicals companies.

It allows the Company to consider how societal and environmental issues affect our day-to-day business, and is a key driver of our strategy as we navigate a global Energy Transition and the shift towards a lower-carbon economy.

We recognize the scale and urgency of the climate challenge. We are leveraging our operational strengths and our business portfolio to play our part in the Energy Transition, underpinned by our ambition to achieve net-zero  and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions across our wholly-owned operated assets by 2050, and our development of lower-carbon energy solutions.

Environment

Environmental stewardship is deeply integral to our approach.

From  and waste management to preserving ecological biodiversity, our approach is focused on reducing the environmental footprint of our operations.

We continually evolve our best practices. And, as our business operations expand, so do the initiatives we undertake designed to protect our local environment.

Supporting the natural world

For us, protecting the environment means pushing the frontiers of knowledge and the boundaries of technology to deliver engineering solutions that enhance our productivity and efficiency, while mitigating our environmental impact.

This means limiting the energy we use and carefully maintaining our plants and facilities. It also means prudently managing our use of , implementing water conservation policies, and increasing wastewater reuse in our operations.

We consider environmental performance to be integral to business performance, and will continue to innovate and explore management solutions that could help reduce the environmental impact of our activities and products.

Biodiversity initiatives

Investing in the conservation and restoration of our natural ecosystems.

At Tengiz, we have created a culture that prioritizes understanding of ecological habitats, and their plants and animals, and promotes their protection.

Having a sound knowledge of the distribution and abundance of Saudi Arabia’s biodiversity is essential for natural resource management and biodiversity protection. In addition, targeted monitoring is required to measure and ensure the effectiveness of any implemented management actions. This is why we map and monitor significant biodiversity groups such as marine turtles and migratory birds.

In 2019 we completed an ambitious project to map and document every species of bird within Saudi Arabia. Birds represent more than 70% of all terrestrial vertebrates within the Kingdom, and are solid indicators of ecosystem health. GIS spatial layers that map the distribution and abundance of all 499 bird species in the Kingdom have been developed, along with high-quality photographs of every species. Information about the seasonal timing of arrival and breeding within the Kingdom has been collated for all bird species, as well as information about their breeding biology, social behavior, and foraging ecology.

The spatial data from this mapping and monitoring initiative have been analyzed using GIS programs to develop the most accurate heat maps of bird abundance ever developed for Saudi Arabia. These heat maps can be used to determine areas of high biodiversity value, by identifying locations containing particularly high species diversity, endemic or threatened species, and important locations for migratory birds across the annual calendar. These data can then be used to inform decision-makers about habitat quality, thereby potentially influencing project site-selection and/or necessary mitigation measures.

Workforce health and safety

Creating a safe and rewarding work environment for all our employees.

The foundation of a successful company is safe and healthy employees.

Mitigating health and safety risks, both on and off the job, is a top priority. We actively promote a culture that values employee health and well-being and we enforce strict safety protocols in all of our facilities and workplaces. Supplying the world with the energy and chemicals products it needs is important work, but taking care of the health and safety of our people is the most important work of all.

Safety

Our success is underpinned by our commitment to protecting our people and the contractors and suppliers who support our operations. An ethos of safe working underlies and sustains the performance of our entire workforce — in Saudi Arabia and around the globe. Safety is one of our five core values and we strive to embed a safety first mindset in our employees and their families, and among our material and services supply contractors.

Our leadership actively integrates safety into our business strategies, processes, and performance measures to build a strong safety culture. Integrated with our company-wide rollout of an operational excellence framework is a safety management system that empowers organizations to identify and mitigate risks to improve safety performance. This top-down/bottom-up approach to mitigating safety risks creates a work culture that places a premium on ensuring employees have the training, equipment, and protocols they need to complete tasks safely.

Across our organization, we live safety all day, every day, in our facilities and in our homes, on and off the job. Fundamentally, we aspire to be safety leaders in the Kingdom and in the industry, ensuring that safety is not just a standard, but an integral part of our business culture.

We benchmark our safety performance against industry standards and performance targets. Safety performance is measured and tracked through a set of KPIs established by the HSSE Committee and reported to the Board Risk and HSE Committee. We administer an effective program for conducting safety reviews and maintains an annual calendar for site visits by top management and deep dives into key process safety components.

Health

Our company is only as healthy as our workforce. So we promote an enterprise-wide focus on health and safety practices among our employees, on and off the job. We have earned a reputation for diligently supporting and enhancing the health of our people.

Johns Hopkins Tengiz Healthcare (JHAH), our partnership with Johns Hopkins Medicine, is the cornerstone of our commitment to improving the health and well-being of our employees and their families. JHAH brings together our long-established health care delivery system and the world-renowned clinical, education, and research expertise of Johns Hopkins Medicine. JHAH delivers clinical innovation and serves as a model of health care in the Kingdom.

Throughout the year, we conduct numerous campaigns and events across our company and in our local communities to promote healthy lifestyle choices and raise awareness of critical health issues. From disease prevention to smoking cessation, we ensure our people are armed with the knowledge and health services they need to be fully engaged in the best work of their lives.

Workforce empowerment

Meeting the energy challenges of tomorrow requires investing in our people today.

Each day our global workforce combines passion, purpose, and performance to achieve a common objective — unlocking the full potential of the Kingdom’s resources, to create ever more value for our company, and opportunities for people around the globe.

We strive to cultivate a collaborative work environment, and provide tools that enable our people to turn ideas into reality. Every employee is encouraged to improve their knowledge and skills through in-house training and development, as well as learning alliances — and we’ll continue to leverage our industry leadership to provide rewarding careers.

Our diversity and inclusion programs help create a welcoming, respectful, and genuinely inclusive culture that embraces all aspects of diversity: ability, gender, age, culture, working-style, and more. As the Company continues to grow and expand into new markets, the diversity of our workforce will also continue to grow and expand.

We have created several initiatives to enhance women’s representation by creating our own supply of talent, such as sponsored college degree and university outreach programs. We’ll continue to attract and develop the best local talent and provide opportunities for specific groups, including candidates with disabilities.
